  • Preparation work starts for new railway station

    Henry James

PREPARATION work has started on the new £7m Maghull North railway station for which is due to open in May of next year.

The new station at School Lane will be built with a new car park and lifts for elderly and disabled passengers.

The station will use land that has previously been developed and which was part of Ashworth Hospital before it was sold a few years ago.

It will be built as a partnership between Merseytravel, Network Rail, Merseyrail and Sefton Council.

According to Merseytravel Committee member John Dodd writing on Parish Councillor Tony Robertson's blog work has started on the “de-vegetation of the railway cutting within the existing Network Rail trackside boundary.”

An ecologist is at the site of the work who will be able to identify if there are any issues as staff work their way along the undergrowth.

Construction work is yet to start and Merseytravel met with Network Rail on Friday, September 8 to discuss further details of the early stages of the work.

Merseytravel say there are no plans to rework the Maghull Circular bus services when the station opens as the buses provide a service for the existing station and pass the new station.

However Merseytravel will be carrying out reviews of the bus services and they will take into account the new station, any proposals for development in east Maghull and the development at Poppy Fields.
