Resort poster up for auction in New York
A RARE vintage poster featuring Southport Sea Bathing Lake is part of a unique lot which is set to go to auction in New York next month.
The poster, Fortunino Matania, Southport, circa 1928, is set to go under the hammer on Thursday, October 26 at the Swann Auction Galleries in the Big Apple and it is estimated to sell for between $7,000-$10,000, which is around £5,270 to £7,530!
Each of the posters in the auction have an estimated value of between £300 and £7,530, giving the Southport poster the highest estimated value.
Fortunino Matania was an Italian artist from Naples who, by 1908, was regularly exhibiting at London's Royal Academy. Much of his work, as in the Southport poster, was commercial, but he did become the preferred artist for the coverage of many Royal events up to 1953.
He was primarily an illustrator who gained fame during the First World War due to his realistic paintings of the battlefields and trenches.
After the war, he went back to magazine illustrations focusing mainly on historical scenes.
Southport Sea Bathing Lake which opened in 1928 was a popular Lido through to its closure in the 1960s.
