Lancashire to play Worcestershire at S&B next August
SOUTHPORT & Birkdale Cricket Club is to host Lancashire’s Specsavers County Championship Division 1 match with newly promoted 2017 Division 2 Champions Worcestershire, at Trafalgar Road, next August.
The cricket match will take place over four days, beginning on Wednesday August 29 and is the last in the three year staging agreement awarded to the Birkdale-based club by the County in 2016.
This will be Worcestershire’s fifth visit to Trafalgar Road, having featured in the first ever County Championship match at the venue in 1959, followed by further visits in 1969, 1975 and 1979 when David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd scored a century in each innings to guide Lancashire to an eight wicket victory.
S&B chairman Tony Elwood said: "Notwithstanding the comfort of our three year staging agreement with Lancashire, we are delighted that they continue to show confidence in us as their first choice outground and the confirmation of this prestigious fixture is a just reward for all of the hard work our volunteers have put in over the past few years.
“We very much look forward to welcoming Worcestershire and their supporters in August and, if they want to know what playing at Southport means, they only have to ask Middlesex chairman Mike O’Farrell, who told me at this year’s match, ‘We have nothing like this, it’s fantastic, how do you do it?’.
“We know that Lancashire fans enjoy coming to Southport and hope they will continue to support us and, with the match scheduled during the school holidays, we can look forward to another great game at Trafalgar Road, so let’s hope the Sun shines!
“We are also delighted to be hosting a Women's KSL match, on Sunday, July 29 , when Lancashire Thunder take on the Hampshire-based Southern Vipers. This is a first for the Club, which we hope will be well received and supported.”
