Builder in remission from cancer raises £3,000 for Macmillan at music event
A BUILDER from Aintree, who is in remission from cancer, helped stage a charity music night at his local social club which raised more than £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Ron Davies, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, organised the fundraiser at the Railway Club in Aintree with the help of his wife Dot, as well as family, friends and fellow committee member, Mick Marsden.
The 63-year-old building contractor, who underwent three operations at Fazakerley Hospital last year, helped Mick line up local artists Ritchie Elwood and Dave Reagan to perform.
More than 300 people packed the Melling Road club and enjoyed a variety of music from the last four decades, from Frank Sinatra to the Kings of Leon, and raised £3,162 for the cancer charity.
Ron, a father-of-three, said: “I just wanted to give something back to Macmillan as a thank you for all their support when I had my diagnosis.
“We decided to hold a music night as a fundraiser, and whenever I mentioned it was for Macmillan everyone was so keen to help out and get involved, especially local businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes.
“I was just blown away by how many people attended on the night and all the support we got.
“The night exceeded all our expectations and we’re delighted to have raised such a fantastic amount of money for such a good cause.”
All the monies donated from the fundraiser will be used towards supporting the charity’s support services across the region, such as Macmillan’s local information and support centres in Aintree and Royal Liverpool hospitals.
Nicole McIlveen, Macmillan’s Fundraising manager for Liverpool, added: “We are so grateful to Ron and his family for supporting Macmillan and raising £3,162, which will help us support local people affected by cancer.
“Their fantastic donation will help us make a difference to the lives of people living with cancer right across the North West.”
