  • Chance to get active in West Lancs in September

    ACTIVE West Lancs is inviting residents to try exciting new activities this month aimed at helping them improve their health and meet new people.

    A three-year programme to improve health and wellbeing across the borough, Active West Lancs is a partnership commissioned by Lancashire County Council and made up of West Lancs Council, Skelmersdale Community Food Initiative, West Lancs School Sports Partnership, West Lancs CVS and West Lancs Community Leisure Trust.

    The latest initiative is a 12-week Active Weight programme in Burscough and Skelmersdale.

    The two-hour daytime sessions help individuals discover the benefits of making healthier food choices, improving their health and becoming more active. Sessions are fun and include some form of gentle exercise, which is advisable but optional.

    Sessions commenced on Monday, September 4, but people can still sign up until week three of the course.

    After the success of the first Active West Lancs ‘Couch to 5k’ course, a new nine-week programme commenced on Monday, September 11 at Lordsgate Township CE Primary School, Burscough.

    Sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7pm, and with the help of programme leaders people can go from small beginnings to completing a continuous 35 to 45-minute run by week nine. Register online by Monday, September 25 at www.runtogether.co.uk

    Later in the month Active West Lancs is organising a September Health Week of free fun activities.

    Events start on Monday, September 18 with an Active Eco Open day at Burscough Community Farm, Meadow Lane between 10am and 2pm. Optional activities include hands-on harvesting and crafts. All activities are free of charge and open to residents of West Lancs.

    On Thursday, September 21 residents can join thousands of other people across Lancashire to cover a mile distance any way they choose. Swim, run, cycle, walk, space hop – the more creative the better. People can record their mile at www.activewestlancs.org

    The week ends on Friday, September 22 with Active Leisure when people can take part in fun activities including indoor bowls, badminton, squash, table tennis, virtual spin, and walking football at Burscough Racquets & Fitness Club between 9am and noon. Residents can also enjoy refreshments and a leisure quiz at noon.

    Active Golf is a new initiative of weekly golf sessions on Fridays from 10am to noon at Beacon Golf Club, Up Holland. Equipment is provided and no previous golf experience is needed. The activity will start when appropriate numbers have signed up.

    Councillor Yvonne Gagen, West Lancs Council cabinet member for leisure, said: “Active West Lancs provides wonderful health and leisure activities for local people. I am sure there will be something you fancy trying, so sign up for one of the programmes or come along to the activities and you will reap the benefits.”

    Active West Lancs also continues to deliver weekly health walks and Active Gym programmes.
