Tommy in three-way battle to be crowned top player in Europe
SOUTHPORT golfer Tommy Fleetwood is in a three-way battle to be crowned the European Tour’s No 1 player.
Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia are the only players who can win the Race to Dubai and will all be competing in the DP World Tour Championship, which starts in Dubai this week.
The tournament will be played at the Jumeirah Golf Estates on Thursday.
Fleetwood is currently first with 4,235,987 points, Rose has 3,979,250 and Garcia has 3,184,582.
At the Nedbank Golf Challenge at San City in South Africa last week Fleetwood was tenth and the event was won by Branden Grace.
He told the European tour website: “As much as it depends on what they do, it is in my hands. I can take it out of everybody's hands but we’ll see.
“I don't know how I’ll feel this week.
“It’s going to be a new experience, it’s going to be a great experience.
“Playing in the Race to Dubai is very, very special and it's something that actually very few people get the chance to do.
“I’m very proud of the year overall.
“We'll see how it goes. Hopefully I can come back on Sunday and I've won both, I've won the tournament and the Race to Dubai.
“That would be great, wouldn't it?”
At the start of the year Fleetwood collected more than £300,000 by taking a European Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
He also finished fourth at The US Open and had been leading the tournament at the halfway stage. He won the French Open as well.
