  • Fire at former college building

    Henry James

A FIRE at the former college building at Yewdale, Skelmersdale is being treated as a suspected arson.

Fire crews from Skelmersdale, Ormskirk and three appliances from Greater Manchester (Wigan, Leigh and Hindley) attended reports of a fire in the open near a disused commercial building after 4am on Thursday, November 1.

When they arrived at the incident they found the fire involved a disused college building.

The fire was on the ground floor of the property and had spread to the second floor at one end of the building.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed to the building to tackle the fire using two hose reels.

At 7.24am the fire had been declared extinguished and the number of fire engines at the scene was reduced to three. This was to ensure that any remaining hotspots were dampened down so as to ensure there would be no flare ups.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and as such a joint investigation alongside colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary is now underway.”

Firefighters stayed on the scene on Thursday morning and carried out a fire investigation on the same day.
