  • Soft service brings big rewards for revamped pub!

    Henry James

A PUB in Lydiate has scooped a national award just 18 months after reopening.

The Weld Blundell pub on Southport Road, beat off competition from 2,700 pubs to be named Best Soft Drinks pub at an awards ceremony run by the Star Pubs & Bars company.

The award is an achievement for licensee Mike Reeve who restored the pub to its former glory as a traditional community local with a £490,000 refurbishment and focus on “excellent service.”

The criteria pubs were judged on included the look of the bar and soft drinks menu, the soft drinks range, knowledgeable friendly staff and a “great serve” including the right amount of ice and garnishes, and well poured drinks at the right temperature.

The Weld Blundell “excelled” in all areas.

The judges mentioned ‘the bar looked spot-on and was really well maintained’ and that the pub ‘had a very good drinks range with broad appeal, catering both for the family audience and adult customers wanting the experience of drinking alcoholic drinks but without the alcohol.’

They also liked the prominence of soft drinks on their menu, prioritising soft drinks which in other pubs are just added to a menu as an afterthought.

In addition to children’s cordials and fruit shoots, The Weld Blundell has a selection of adult soft drinks. Mike said: “The win is a massive surprise and a great accolade as it shows how serious we are about getting things right for customers, from a warm welcome, to great drinks served by friendly, professional staff.

“We’re always looking to improve and move with the times, with ongoing staff training and new menus.”

Lawson Mountstevens, managing director of Star Pubs & Bars said: “Mike has done a great job at The Weld Blundell, creating a popular family pub with high standards, fantastic staff and a great attention to detail. Well done to Mike and his team.”
