  • Visitors flock to switch-on of festive lights at Concourse

    Henry James

VISITORS flocked to the Concourse shopping centre on Saturday (November 23) for the official Christmas lights switch-on.

This year’s main attractions for the festive period are three singing animatronic penguins, which are located next to the Christmas tree in the East Square by Wilko.

These characters perform three a-capella songs and move in time to the beat. Shoppers can press a button and these fun penguins start their moves.

Community was key at the event and Subway franchisee Simon Gould sung live with his band, Out of Chaos. Other local groups included CD Music Academy, Dynasty Dance, Delph Side Community Primary School, Learning Stars and Dream Makers.

Santa attending the festive launch, and youngsters could see him for free and get selfies with him on the day.

Elsa and Anna, the stars from Frozen 2, were also in the centre, doing meet and greets.

Bjorn the Bear, The Winter Fairy, The Red Hot Santas, and The Christmas stiltwalkers, entertained families throughout the day around the centre.

There was also a free facepainting and glitter bar, located next to the Christmas tree.

Children can also send their wishlist letters to Santa – the Concourse has a special post box in the East Square until Christmas Eve, with guaranteed delivery to the North Pole.

Father Christmas will respond to anyone posting their letters by December 19 – the collection station will be by the Christmas tree.

Max Spielmann hosted Christmas photo shoots, in the East Square, for youngsters who had turned up wearing fancy dress.
