Students in Skelmersdale enjoy 'life in fast lane' during New York trip
OUR Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College in Skelmersdale has organised yet another successful trip to New York for its students.
Learners enjoyed four very busy days of ‘life in the fast lane’, encountering the diverse cultures this famous city embraces along with its iconic landmarks and architecture.
On day one the Year 11’s embarked by foot on a sightseeing tour of Lower Manhattan which included: A subway and ferry journey to visit ‘Lady Liberty’; reflection time at Ground Zero; a walk over Brooklyn Bridge; time spent at the ‘triumphant’ Washington Square Arch; the Colonnade at Confucius plaza; and the elaborate grand entrance to Manhattan Bridge.
They also visited Wall Street, ate in Chinatown and Little Italy and enjoyed a spot of shopping before walking down 5th Avenue to visit the Flatiron Building before returning to the hotel.
On day two the group ascended The Empire State Building to catch a view of Manhattan from 1,250 feet, from here they could see New York Public Library, Grand Central Station, The Chrysler Building and The Rockefeller Plaza.
They also visited the 1878 Neo-Gothic St Patrick’s Cathedral with spires that reach 329 feet and stained glass windows that were designed by artists from Birmingham, England. Day two ended with time spent enjoying the hustle and bustle of Times Square.
The rest of the time was spent visiting Columbus Circle and Upper Manhattan, ice skating at Central Park, enjoying meals at The Hard Rock Café and ended back at Times Square for some last minute shopping.
Trip leader Sue Quane commented: “It was, once again, a pleasure to be able to take our students on a trip that gives them such a unique and potentially life changing experience.
“We live in an ever-growing competitive and accessible world so trips like this for our students can prove invaluable as they consider and plan their future. Such an experience for a 15/16 year old could quite easily influence the career path they choose.
“Our Lady Queen of Peace has offered this trip to Year 11 students for several years now and, once again, the students have been a real credit to their families and to our school as they fully embrace the packed, exhilarating experience of New York.”
