  • England golfer Georgia Hall wins Women's Open

    Henry James

ENGLAND'S Georgia Hall took golf’s Women’s British Open in front of big home crowds at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

She shot a five-under-par 67 on Sunday, August 5 to beat Pornanong Phatlum by two shots.

The 22-year-old ended up on 17-under and is the first Englishwoman to win her home country's biggest title since Karen Stupples in 2004 and the first British winner since Catriona Matthew in 2009, also at Royal Lytham & St Annes. It was Hall's first major title.

She took home a winner's cheque of $490,000 and said: “It is too good to be true. It was my goal when I was nine to win the British Open. I am so happy.”

During the week Royal Birkdale's Florentyna Parker scored a hole in one at the ninth hole in her opening round of 69. After two rounds she was in the top 10 and five shots off the lead.

Her scores were not as good over the weekend though (75 and 76) and she was to finish at two over par and in tied 47th place.
