  • Model railway group to be taken on a whirlwind tour of station architecture

    Danielle Thompson

MEMBERS of Southport Model Railway Society enjoyed a detailed look at the construction of the Merseyrail Loop and Link lines, which revolutionised travel in Liverpool 40 years ago.

The talk was given by John Ryan, using his original colour slides taken whilst working as the liaison engineer on what has been the only main line underground railway built outside London for more than a century.

The society’s next talk will take place at the club room on Portland Street on Tuesday, December 11. Guest speaker, architect Graham Whitehead, will take members through a whirlwind review of station architecture from 1930 onwards from the Liverpool to Manchester Railway right through to Canary Wharf station.

Jim Ford, secretary at the society said: “Graham has a particular passion for railway architecture and has amassed thousands of photos, some of which he will share at his talk. He will then concentrate on smaller urban and rural station architecture, hopefully providing inspiration for future layouts. Graham is also willing to take us through his many photographs of signal boxes, engine and good sheds, if time allows.

“The talk is open to interested members of the public and if you want to attend, just turn up in good time, preferably e-mailing in advance on drjimford@btinternet.com.”
