  • Amazon’s ‘Alexa’ technology helps care home residents find their voices

    Danielle Thompson

STAFF at a care home in Formby have launched a pioneering new initiative to bring their residents up-to-speed with the latest technology using voice-command devices.

Athena Health Care Group runs a Community Activities Hub and their latest project has seen them team up with software company Yozu, who have provided Alexa devices for residents living at Woodlands Lodge in Formby.

Residents will now be able to use the voice-command devices to play music, find out what the weather is like and hear news updates and turn lights on or off.

Lesley Malone, events organiser for the healthcare group said: “Our ladies and gentlemen are looking forward chatting to Alexa.

“We are known to be at the forefront of the latest care innovations and we want to push the boundaries once more with the implementation of smart home technology throughout all care homes.”

Meanwhile, staff at the care home group's Parklands Lodge Care Home in Southport have been celebrating after winning national awards.

Suzie Corbett won the 2018 Regional Great British Care Awards, while Lorraine Johns and Maxine Nichol were finalists.

The awards are a celebration of excellence across the care sector.
