Southport golfer features in new programme by BBC North West Tonight
SOUTHPORT-BORN golfer Tommy Fleetwood is featured in a new programme by BBC North West Tonight, looking back at how he started out in the sport and went on to become one of the best players in the world.
With contributions from Tommy, his wife, father, coach and caddie, as well as golfers Colin Montgomerie and Francesco Molinari and footballer Robbie Fowler, The Making of Tommy Fleetwood looks back at how Tommy went from sneaking onto golf courses because he couldn’t afford to play there to winning the Ryder Cup in 2018.
The programme has been given access to never-before-seen home video footage of Tommy’s childhood and follows him to golf tournaments in the UK and USA.
Discussing how Tommy first started out, his father, Peter said: “Every night without fail. Rain, snow, anything. The little mad man would be here swinging away.
“He’s exactly the same when he was 10, probably a bit more even-tempered now but everyone likes him, nobody says a bad word about him. So that’s why we’re proud of him… plus the golf.”
Speaking about how Tommy has gone on to become a success, Ian Finnis, his Caddy said: “His life has changed more than anyone’s because he’s Tommy Fleetwood and everyone in the golf world knows him.
“I do take the mick out of him a bit, saying he’s gone big time but he’s as normal as you can come.”
Golf Channel Commentator, Brandel Chamblee, said: “There are not that many golf players that are instantly recognisable and you know, you look at Tommy and he’s got the long hair and it seems like he’s been around for a while but he’s only 28 and the prime of his careers just ahead of him.”
The Making of Tommy Fleetwood will be available on the BBC iPlayer from Friday, July 12 and on BBC Two at 10.30am on Sunday, July 14.
There will also be showings on the BBC News Channel over the weekend and a three-part special on BBC North West Tonight, starting on Friday, July 12.
