Residents celebrate library's 40th anniversary
RESIDENTS joined council officials and staff to celebrate Skelmersdale Library’s 40th anniversary.
A special event was held at the venue in Southway to mark the milestone with the Friends of Skelmersdale Library providing refreshments, and photographs and memorabilia on display for visitors to share memories and stories.
Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, County Councillor Peter Buckley, said: “I was delighted to see so many people at the event. It is another reminder of just how important libraries are for local communities.
And county council chairman and Skelmersdale councillor, Terry Aldridge, added: “It was great to see the library buzzing with activity, and so many people obviously very keen to celebrate the happy occasion.
“I firmly believe that libraries are a vital part of a local community. People can go into their local library to do much more than borrow a book.
“I know this library very well, and it was a pleasure to go along and celebrate.”
Meanwhile, visitors are being invited to take along their own photographs or memorabilia and their memories and stories of the library will be shared later in the year.
