Coronation Street suicide storyline inspires new appeal
FOLLOWING a recent Coronation Street episode in which a character committed suicide, health professionals from Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Mindsmatter service are urging people in distress to get in touch.
The soap’s Aidan Connor, played by actor Shayne Ward, took his own life in a storyline aimed at raising awareness of the high level of suicide among young men.
Kieren Fleck, Mindsmatter service manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Coronation Street has done a great job in raising awareness on male suicide, especially coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week (May 14-20).
“There is a lot of help and support available out there and although the recent topical storyline may cause upset and distress to people, it also serves the purpose of raising awareness about mental health.
“If people are struggling then we do encourage them to get in touch with the Mindsmatter Service.”
