INTERNATIONAL engineering company Trelleborg, has submitted a planning application to West Lancs Council to extend its Skelmersdale factory which it says could create up to 300 jobs.
The proposal is to erect a new building at the existing site in Stanley Way for the development of a new product line which, the company says will create more than 100 new posts initially.
And planning documents for the proposed new 2,640 square metre production building suggest that a total of 300 new jobs will result when the generated capacity is converted into sales.
Trelleborg has operations in more than 50 countries worldwide, manufacturing components used in the petrochemical, marine and offshore power generation sectors.
The proposed new Skelmersdale facility would create renewable products used for offshore power generation. According to the Planning Design and Access Statement for the proposal, the “job opportunities will be advertised within the local community positively impacting employment rates within the local area and moreover, the development will significantly impact the local economy in a positive aspect, creating sustainable employment opportunities for local residents.”
The reasons for the expansion are explained in planning documents, which state: “Due to the re-organisation of some of Trelleborg’s operations combined with strong market growth within the sector, an industrial building is required to increase the capacity of operations within Trelleborg’s Offshore business.
“The Stanley Way site is the group’s flagship facility for buoyancy manufacture and is the organisation’s first choice for development, however it is noted that if the site in Skelmersdale is prevented from such an opportunity to support the growing demand in the market, the expansion of Trelleborg’s operations will defer to its Brazilian offshore manufacturing facility based in Macae.”
Trelleborg has said this expansion demonstrates their “ongoing commitment” to the Stanley Way site and is a “clear demonstration” of their “confidence” in the area and its workforce.
If the proposal is approved it is expected that there will be an increase in goods vehicles by about 10%. It is also planned to increase parking capacity by about 90 vehicles.
The Design and Access statement for the proposal states that the new building is “in keeping” with the existing buildings and others within the Stanley Way Industrial estate.
And it goes on to state that the site area is of “sufficient size to easily accommodate” the scale of extension without risking over development.”
