OFFICIALS of a local table tennis club are looking to recruit new members - particularly youngsters and women.
The Skelmersdale Lathom Table Tennis Club was founded by a group of friends following a night out in Liverpool when they came across a table in a bar and enjoyed their ‘knock-about’ so much they were inspired to take up the sport on a regular basis.
One of the founders, John Hodgson, 56, from Ashurst, said: “It was Christmas 2018 when a group of us went to Liverpool for a drink and found a table tennis table at the Roxy bar.
“We all had a go and after that we wanted to play some more. There was a table at Burscough Sports Centre and the four of us went every Tuesday to play.
“After a while we bought our own table and used it at Ashurst Community Centre. Then we bought more tables and moved to Lathom High School where there was more space.”
The club now has 10 tables - with members playing at Lathom High on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.30 to 8.30pm - and its own coach in Bob Edwards.
John added: “The staff at Lathom High have been fantastic. I would also like to thank Mark Stuthridge, who was on the original trip to Liverpool, for his help and Steve Luck who does all the fixtures.
“We have a team in the Wigan and District Third Division who are currently top of the league.”
The club currently has 25 adult members and one junior member and John said: “Ideally we would really like to see more young people come along and women too.”
