ORMSKIRK Market has reopened in a further huge boost to traders and shoppers in the town.
The market was welcomed back last Thursday (June 18) and despite rotten weather to greet its return, stallholders have their fingers crossed that the promised brighter weather this week together with the further relaxation of restrictive lockdown measures will soon see an upturn in business.
Its return will, to begin with, see limited numbers of stalls and a new layout as part of ‘carefully considered’ coronavirus safety measures. Cont. inside

The reopening was greeted by stallholders as ‘great news’ with one thrilled trader, saying: “I saw the vans pulling up on my run at 6am, ready to set up, and it filled me with joy! Welcome back.”
A spokesperson for West Lancs Borough Council announced the re-opening of the outdoor market in an online post on the borough council’s website at 5pm the Wednesday before it reopened the following day.
The post read “We know many of you have been waiting patiently to be able to come out and show your favourite traders your support and so we want to make sure you can do so safely.
“The number of traders has been limited and the layout of the market has been carefully considered.
“The traders planned to be operating will be selling groceries, fast food, clothing, accessories, bedding and towels, sportswear and children's clothing.
“We anticipate that all traders will be able to return soon.”
A spokesperson for Discover Ormskirk, the official tourism page for West Lancashire, said: “The rain hadn’t dampened too many spirits in Ormskirk on June 18!
“It was delightful to see some familiar faces back on Ormskirk Market and supporting social distancing.
“We also couldn’t be happier to see some of our favourite shops re-opened and doing everything they can to help you feel safe whilst you shop.
“Thank you to those who came out to support them in their first big step back to (some kind of) normality.”
Commenting on Discover Ormskirk’s cheery Facebook post about reopening, social media users described the reopening as ‘lovely’ and ‘amazing to see.’
Joan Branwood said: “Good to be back, shame the weather wasn't kind to us, but it didn't dampen our spirits!”
Thomas James Reardon added: “I saw the vans pulling up on my run at 6am, ready to set up and it filled me with joy! Welcome back!” while Suzanne Connell added: “It was wonderful to shop at the market again, thanks to all the stall holders.”
There will be lots of signage in Ormskirk Town Centre reminding shoppers to observe social distancing measures
If you are planning a visit, the council are reminding that you please be careful to allow others adequate space to shop safely and wear a face covering if you are able to, although facecoverings are not compulsory.
