Review by RON ELLIS
In the last five years, Southport author and BBC Radio Merseyside presenter, Spencer Leigh, has written no less than five comprehensive show business biographies, all published by McNidder and Grace.
But for 2020, along comes his piece de resistance, a 510 page biography of Bob Dylan entitled ‘Outlaw Blues.’
Spencer (pictured) spoke to over 300 musicians, friends and acquaintances of Dylan in this entertaining in-depth study and it makes for a fascinating and totally absorbing book, quite unlike any biography I have ever read – and it is not just about Dylan.
There are several mini-biographies of other artistes, along with loads of scandalous show business stories that would fill a hundred gossip magazines, plus a constant stream of highly amusing acerbic side comments from the author.
Add to this a forty page bibliography, sixteen pages of photos and, most importantly, a detailed index and you have a book to keep and treasure for years to come and which you will find yourself constantly dipping into. A great read.
The ultimate biography of one of the century’s most significant artistes - signed copies of ‘Bob Dylan: Outlaw Blues’ are on sale at Broadhursts in Southport and Pritchards in Crosby.
