Nursery helps raise cash for Chester Zoo

Nursery helps raise cash for Chester Zoo

STAFF and children from a Litherland nursery want to help raise £20,000 to support Chester Zoo.

Youngsters from Kids Planet Litherland want to help some of their favourite animals by fundraising for the cash-strapped zoo which is suffering due to the impact of coronavirus.

They have already raised more than £500 after six staff members walked all the way to the zoo to meet some of the staff and animals. The Litherland nursery has joined other Kids Planet nurseries from around the country in the hope of raising a combined £20,000.

Nursery manager Alex Cullen, who has a BA Hons in Early Childhood and Education, is passionate about the way animals aid many of pre-school learning through play activities.

He said: “With our approach to child-centred learning we encourage children to learn through their own interests. Whether it’s helping to build foundations in language or maths or social skills, animals always feature highly and provide rich learning opportunities for every age and stage of pre-school life.

“Whilst we have held and will continue to hold more fundraising activities with our children at the nursery, we felt we wanted to do something in our free time to boost our contribution and get fit in the process.

“It was a wonderful day and it was great to be able to meet Lucy Plows, the sales and events supervisor, and visit a few of the animals. It was quite late in the day but we managed to see the giraffes, elephants, lions, camels, rhinos and a few others too.

“Chester Zoo is adored by our children, families and staff and we would all be devastated if it was forced to close due its lack of funds during the Covid-19. We have been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had since we launched at the beginning of the month.

“Donations are continuing to come through the crowdfunding page, in addition to the sponsorship we have already received.

“We are proud to support Chester Zoo and hope that our efforts can help them through these difficult times and look forward to continuing our relationship with them through our animal sponsorship programme.”
