Young filmmakers to host Plaza premiere

Young filmmakers to host Plaza premiere

by Tom Martin (August 2020)

THREE young filmmakers who took part in a workshop at the Plaza Cinema will return to the venue to host a premiere screening of their new film!

Conor O’Neil, John Reynolds and Matthew Reynolds, who are known as ‘Some Guys with a Camera’, enjoyed a project at the local cinema when they were taught the basics of film making.

The trio will be back at the Plaza on Monday, September 7 at 7pm for the screening of ‘Blackbird’.

Scripted, directed and produced by Conor, John and Matthew, the film is set in Liverpool in 1985 and focuses upon nihilistic loner, Mary Kate as she turns to petty crime to climb the class ladder as an inner-city avenger.

Blackbird has been released to much critical acclaim, including selection for the Buenos Aires International Film Festival as well as being finalists at the Flickfair Festival in June this year.

Matthew said: “For a film shot in my nan's living room with my mates as the cast, we are incredibly flattered by the success Blackbird has had!

“If it wasn't for the Plaza Cinema, we’d have never started Some Guys with a Camera, so it’s a brilliant full-circle moment to be screening it there.”

Conor added: “There are many projects I'm proud of, but I think Blackbird is the perfect culmination of all our own personal strengths, weaknesses and styles to create something that is truly a Some Guys with a Camera film. Warts and all.”

Christine Physick, arts and education director at the Plaza was thrilled to hear of their success, and was delighted to offer them a screening at the Plaza.

She said: “I am very proud of what they have achieved. It is amazing that three young lads from Liverpool have attracted the attention of judges at the Buenos Aires International Film Festival as well as FlickFair.

“We are delighted to help them on their journey as filmmakers by showcasing their talents at the Plaza.”

Tickets for this event are free, but the Plaza is asking those attending to make a small donation on the night to help support the work of the community cinema.

If you would like to see Blackbird, email Christine Physick; with your name, a contact number and the number of seats that you would like.
