THIS year’s Santa Float around Crosby will go ahead despite coronavirus restrictions – but cash donations have been scrapped with locals asked to instead give money by text.
The festive attraction is popular with local youngsters and their families when it travels around the town alongside volunteers who collect money for the Crosby Rotary Club.
Organisers say the float will still make the usual journey despite the Tier 3 restrictions, but donations will have to be made by text.
A spokesperson said: “For the last 52 years Crosby Rotary Club has every Christmas taken its Santa Float around the streets of Cosby collecting money and in that time we have raised over £400,000 for local charities and good causes.
“This year with the current Covid-19 restrictions likely to still be in place we will be unable to enlist the support of our usual volunteer force of collectors.
“Because we know the great pleasure our Santa Float brings to both young and old at this time of the year we have decided to proceed with the float on all our usual routes. We will, however, not be collecting cash from house to house, instead we will operate a digital collection and we will be asking everyone to donate via text on their mobile phones.
“Also for those that would prefer to make a cash donation then pop into Martin Glenn Opticians, Liverpool Road Crosby where cash can be left.
“We hope you will agree with us that it is vital that we still try and raise these funds to carry on supporting our local charities and good causes especially in this time when so many have seen their fundraising adversely affected by this pandemic.”
To make a donation, text ‘NOEL’ to 70085 followed by the amount you wish to donate. So for example, to donate £3 you would need to text ‘NOEL 3’.
Text cost the donation amount plus one standard rate message.
