Marine 0
Tottenham 5
There was no fairytale cup upset for Marine in their FA Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur, but they did the town proud with a battling performance against the Premier League giants.
It took Jose Mourinho’s team 24 minutes to open the scoring against the plucky Mariners, but it was the Crosby team who came closest to breaking the deadlock with a stunning strike from Kengni which rattled the crossbar.
In the end, the quality of Tottenham showed with goals coming from Alves Morais (3), Moura and Devine as they ran away with the game.
But the Marine players can hold their heads up high as they put on a brave show in front of the watching millions at home on BBC1, as well as the odd neighbour who had a good view from their back gardens!
Before the match, some locals had gathered outside the Marine Travel Arena to greet the Mariners and try to catch a glimpse of the star-studded Tottenham squad.
The eagerly awaited team news saw Mourinho rest several key players, including Harry Kane who stayed at home, but there were some big names involved, including Deli Alli and Gareth Bale, who was a second half substitute.
Even though Marine’s magical cup run has now come to an end, the Crosby club still enjoyed a bumper day of revenue after a virtual ticket idea led to more than 25,000 purchases from football fans around the world.
