AN INSPIRATIONAL six-year-old is aiming to walk one million steps in just three months to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of his great-grandad.

Elliot George Hatfield, who attends Birkdale Primary, has taken on the challenge in honour of his great-grandad, Brendan Reilly, who passed away two years ago from dementia.

The youngster’s mum, Natalie, explained: “Considering Elliot (pictured, right) was so young at the time he remembers a lot about his great grandad and knows that he spent the last year of his life getting cared for in a care home. Elliot said he would like to help raise money for these homes.

“His grandad, Colin Reilly, who he calls Grandad Col, has also recently completed a charity challenge so that’s where Elliot got the idea from.”

Elliot walks to various train stations to up his steps and has learnt all the stations from Southport to Hunts Cross line and wants to try and walk the length of it. He constantly wants to beat his highest steps and walk one station further.

“We are extremely proud of Elliot for taking on this challenge.”

Elliot added: “Walking is my favourite thing to do especially getting to see different train stations along the way. I love that I am raising money to help people with dementia at the same time. I sometimes get tired legs - but then I get more energy if I’m allowed Jelly Babies!”

Linzi Stewart, Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser for Merseyside, paid tribute to Elliot’s fundraising efforts: “People affected by dementia need us now more than ever, but the pandemic has hit us hard financially, despite an unprecedented demand for our services.

“Following a difficult year for people with dementia, we are in awe of supporters like Elliot whose brilliant fundraising efforts enable us to reach more people through our vital support services, like the Dementia Connect support line.

“Our services have been used 3.7 million times since March 2020 and have been a lifeline to thousands, but there are so many more who urgently need our help.”
