BARBER Gemma Mitchley has been a fan of superhero films for many years, so when she decided to start her own business in Skelmersdale she knew what theme it should take!
Gemma recently opened her barber shop, D.C. Barbers, on Ormskirk Road with a comic book theme, and she can be seen cutting her customer’s hair while dressed in a Batwoman cloak.
The 36-year-old came up with the idea while talking about the business with her husband, and the idea is not a joke.
Gemma is certainly not winging it either as she has 20 years experience in the profession. Before the first lockdown she was made redundant from a barber shop in Wigan following maternity leave.
Gemma told the Champion: “I grew up watching superhero films. The Dark Knight is my favourite film, so I decided my shop should have a comic book theme as well.
“There are so many traditional barber shops, and this is not one of them. It is a different spin on that.
“Kids can dress up as Captain America, Superman, Batman and Robin.
“The idea is to give my customers something different and give them an experience.
“Children may feel that going to the hairdressers is not so scary after visiting my barber shop. It is something fun for them. It was an idea my husband and I thought about.
“We offer comics while people are waiting too rather than the traditional magazines. There is a sweet bowl with the Joker’s face as well.
“It is also a men’s barber shop. I have had positive feedback on social media so far.”
