Husband and wife to tackle nine day cycling challenge for charity

by Tom Martin (August 2021)

A MARRIED couple will aim to cycle an incredible 970 miles to raise money for the Formby Befriending Scheme.

Local solicitor Liz Foggin and husband Matt will attempt to travel the length of Great Britain – from Land’s End to John O’ Groats – in just nine days.

The event, called The Deloitte Ride Across Britain, will take place between September 4-12 and will involve around 1,000 cyclists.

The couple want to support the Formby Befriending Scheme so they can help local people combat loneliness.

Liz said: “The common goal of reaching John O’ Groats together creates a very special type of camaraderie. No matter what type of cyclist you are, you can talk to anyone on the ride and say: ‘How are you or how is your day?’

“We are all social animals and the additional isolation created by the Covid pandemic has most certainly added to the challenges that many people face as they advance in years.

“All sponsorship raised from our ride will go directly to the Formby Befriending Scheme in helping local residents combat loneliness so that people can also ask them – how are you and how is your day?”

Liz and Matt have paid fully for the ride themselves. This means that every donation goes straight to supporting Formby and Hightown residents.

Every penny of sponsorship will also encourage both Liz and Matt as they turn their pedals on the arduous journey.

Liz will be blogging the ride on her ‘Autumn Years Law’ Facebook page, which you will be able to follow daily during the event.
