Young boxers represent Waterloo ABC at two events

by Ollie Cowan (September 2021)

A sefton boxing gym has produced its first fighters in 26 years after four teenagers represented their club at two recent events.

Waterloo ABC was reopened in 2018 after two decades by boxer Shaun Farmer in the hope of “producing champions.”

Over the past few weeks, Zac Roberts, Harry Barnes, Harry McCettrick and James Crilly, who are all 14-years-old, fought at shows in Ellesmere Port on Saturday, August 28 and another event in Kirkdale on Saturday, September 4.

Shaun said: “I’ve never quite felt proud of what I’ve achieved with reopening the club again and people often said I bet you’re proud of what you’ve done.

“Well last week, being there and being in the kids’ corner made me proud. Looking at the other coaches in the corner made me realise we’ve got an unbelievable team and now yes I’m proud.

“It’s a great achievement for all the coaching staff as it’s nearly five years since we started making plans to get the club up and running again and 26 years since our famous old club has had a fighter box.”

Shaun opened Waterloo ABC, which is based on Brighton Road, as a “community gym” for the next generation of boxers.
