FUNERAL homes across the region have come together to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week.
To mark the week, which is running now and ends on Friday, October 15, eight funeral homes across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire are being lit up pink and blue in memory of babies who passed away.
Kayleigh Holt, funeral arranger at Porters Funeralcare on Bispham Road in Southport has created ‘bags of love’ for people to collect from the homes which contain healing crystals, a wooden angel, dove and tealight candle for the Wave of Light 2021 event. Co-op Funeralcare in Porters has also recently opened a baby chapel of rest, the second in the region, offering a comfortable and private environment for grieving parents to mourn.
The global Wave of Light event is a time for bereaved parents, families, and friends to remember all the babies and children who have sadly passed away. Colleagues at the funeral homes are urging local residents to take part, by lighting a candle to remember all those who we have sadly lost.
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, in partnership with charity CRADLE, is recording the Wave of Light ceremony and support event to be broadcast on the hospital’s YouTube channel at 6.45pm on Friday October 15.
Regan Galley, funeral service manager at Co-op Funeralcare in Southport, said: “Supporting bereaved parents is something that I am deeply passionate about and the first baby chapel of rest in Ormskirk has acted as a safe space for grieving parents to mourn the unimaginable loss of their babies. We hope to offer even more support for those in the region with the opening of the new chapel.
“It is a privilege for my colleagues and I to come together across the region to raise awareness around this devastating issue. I am committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the right bereavement care exists for those that need it.”
The funeral homes will each host a memory tree in their branches for people to come in and write a special message on tags that will be on display throughout the week. Homes taking part include Cookson Tyrer Funeralcare on Smithy Walk in Burscough and Ormskirk Funeralcare on Wigan Road.
