Orchestra is back with a bang with the help of two local composers

MAGHULL Wind Orchestra have been enjoying being able to make music together again, and being joined at rehearsals by local composers Karl Whelan and Trevor Halliwell.

Karl’s piece Hymn to the Angels was played by the orchestra as one of its lockdown virtual performances, while Trevor has provided them with some new material which they debuted for him at rehearsal.

Trevor’s pieces ‘Music for a Celebration’, ‘Venice by Night’, ‘Amore Eterna’ and ‘Intermezzo’ were well received by the orchestra with members finding them both interesting and challenging to play.

The orchestra’s musical director Phil Shotton said: “Working alongside composers to play their music is an absolute luxury that most bands wouldn’t get.

“It is essential to the understanding of the idiom for both musicians and composers to work together in this way in real time.”

The orchestra have a busy December planned with members appearing in various locations throughout the month including Ormskirk Artisan Market, Burscough Wharf, and the Beales department store and the Tap and Bottle bar in Southport.

There will also be an indoor concert taking place at St Andrew’s Church, Maghull on Tuesday, December 21.
