Following the find, the building at Heysham Road has remained closed and around 40 members of staff have been sent home.

A spokesperson for BT said: “BT has recently become aware of the presence of material containing asbestos found in a suspect condition at its Aintree Technical Engineering Centre near Bootle in Merseyside.

“The site was closed on October 29, 2021 as a precautionary measure, pending further investigation, assessment and appropriate remediation.

“BT has notified the Health and Safety Executive and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and customers.

“We are in the process of contacting colleagues who are deemed to have connections with the site.

“A web page is available on BT.com and we will update this with the latest information and support as soon as we can.”
