Port striker Carver’s joy at ‘dream move’ to Football League club

SOUTHPORT striker Marcus Carver has signed for Football League side Hartlepool United.

It is a dream move for the 28-year-old who joined the League Two side for an undisclosed fee.

Carver has been in excellent form for the Yellows this season with 17 goals in all competitions and is third in the National League North goalscoring charts.

It is understood he has attracted a lot of interest from Football League club scouts.

Southport manager Liam Watson said: “We have had a few enquiries about Marcus and this deal is good for the club and the player.

“I have always maintained that I would never stand in the way of any player at Southport who has the opportunity to progress and wish him well at Hartlepool.”

Carver’s goal scoring form has made him a fans favourite at Haig Avenue and he broke a club record by scoring in nine consecutive home matches earlier in the season.

His goals included a spectacular overhead effort against his former club Chorley in the FA Trophy.

Prior to his move to Southport in the summer, Carver had spent five years with Chorley.

He had previously had loan spells with Barrow and Halifax Town after coming through the youth ranks at Accrington Stanley.

Carver said: “If someone said to me at the age of 28 I would have the chance to play in the Football League again, I would have laughed.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me and my family.

He added: “I would like to thank every single person at Southport for the last 18 months.

“Thank you to all the fans and volunteers for their never ending support and believing in me.

“Thank you to the players and Liam Watson for giving me the chance and having confidence in me.

“This team is an amazing bunch of lads and I wish nothing but the best for them and Southport FC in the future. I will miss Haig Avenue.”
