Incredible pictures show how 'Tower of Hope' could stand 48-storeys high on Lord Street

THESE incredible images show how Lord Street could soon have one of the tallest buildings outside of London as part of ambitious plans to build a 48 storey-high hotel at the site of the former Grand Casino.

The Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group, which already owns a number of other prominent venues in the town, wants to build the 178 metre tall building, which they are calling The Tower of Hope.

By way of comparison, the Radio City Tower in Liverpool is 138m tall and The Shard in London, which is the tallest building in the UK, stands at 310m high.

The Tower of Hope will contain 109 hotel rooms, more than 140 apartments, a restaurant, a wedding venue, a bar and a substantial car park.

The ambitious project will be part of the ongoing work currently taking place at the former Grand Casino, as the Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group looks to breathe fresh life into the historic building.

Andrew Mikhail, Chairman of Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group, believes the Tower of Hope would be “the single biggest project that will have come to Southport.”

He said: “New York City started with a single brick once upon a time as did London and every major city and town. We need to cherish our past and we should be building our own future so other generations can bask in our glory rather keep talking and referring to our past continuously.”

The Tower of Hope would add to The Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group’s growing portfolio in Southport, with the company already owning The Bold Hotel, Lord Street Hotel, Punch Tarmey’s Irish Pub and Lord Street Sports Bar.

The new building would also have a health and wellbeing centre for the local community, a gym and spa, along with green spaces for exercise and community activities.

The Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group believe the tower would attract many tourists, create a “huge number of jobs” and help other nearby independent businesses.

Mr Mikhail added: “I hope that people will look up, see the Tower of Hope and realise, that anything is possible.

“The plans for this landmark building incorporating the Grand Casino will connect the past, present and future of Southport together. My aim is to build phase one and the hotel then any profits proceeding the sales of apartments will all go to a charity or charities of the local people’s choice.

“I’m proud to continue to invest in Southport, having already invested millions into our current developments in Southport’s Northern Quarter. We are looking forward to sitting down with all the relevant parties at Sefton Council and getting this final and largest phase over the line.

“The recent Town Deal funding announcement has been a great boost for Southport and on the back of those funds hopefully more investments will flood into Southport like the one we are proposing now. The council anticipates over £400m of private sector investment following their Town Deal schemes and The Tower of Hope will be a major contributor to this, further stimulating the local economy. These are very exciting times for Southport town centre again.”

A planning application is yet to be made for the tower. Plans and further details about the project will be available to view at an event at The Bold Hotel on a date to be announced soon.
