Be prepared for a very different night at theatre

by Henry James (May 2022)

RICHARD O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show it definitely a unique musical.

The audience dresses up as characters from the show to come and watch it, and they like to participate, when they can, throughout the evening.

It is currently at the Liverpool Empire and can be seen until this Saturday (May 21).

Philip Franks as the Narrator is very amusing and it is difficult to believe he played the straight-laced Charley in The Darling Buds of May. Charley was married to Catherine Zeta Jones’s character.

Brad Majors (Ore Oduba) and his fiancée Janet Weiss (Haley Flaherty) do not know what they have let themselves in for when they look for a telephone in an old castle, during a rainstorm.

Oduba, who is a former Strictly Come Dancing winner, is entertaining as Brad.

Equally impressive is Kristian Lavercombe as Riff Raff, the hunchbacked handyman at the castle. He leads the dancing to the most famous song of the show – the Time Warp.

Soon after we are introduced to Frank N Furter, played by Stephen Webb. He dominates the stage as his character should.

In the first half we also meet Riff Raff’s sister, Magenta (Suzie McAdam), who is also a maid. There is also Columbia, a groupie, who is played by Lauren Ingram and Rocky (Ben Westhead).

Joe Allen shows his versatility by performing two completely different characters, which are Eddie and Dr Scott.

Another catchy song in the show is Science Fiction/Double Feature, which is sung right at the beginning of the night.

Those who have booked to see this production, and know nothing of the musical or the film, should be ready to enjoy a very different night at the theatre. 8/10
