Golf pro speaks of his successful switch from tour to coaching

by Henry James (June 2022)

A SOUTHPORT-BASED golfing professional who played more than 200 tournaments on the European and Challenge Tour has said he has had a successful first year since he decided to coach full time.

Charlie Ford made the decision to coach following difficulties trying to return from a long-injury, the Covid lockdowns and having a young family.

He started coaching full time in May 2021 and is based at an indoor facility, The Hub, which is at the Enterprise Business Park on Russell Road, Southport.

Charlie commented: “Following difficulties trying to return from a long injury lay-off, lockdown hitting and a young family, we made the decision to change career.

“Having been away for 35 weeks per year since I was 18, being home throughout lockdown certainly changed the perspective. We spent a long time assessing what to do next and coaching stood out as the next chapter due to my personality, what I had learned from the world’s best players and coaches, experiences and passion for the sport.

“The start has been very encouraging with clients continuing to return as well as new players coming onboard as the word spreads. I just hope I can reach more people and start to help them improving their game.”

Charlie first started playing golf when he was 10 years old. He commented: “As I progressed I was offered the opportunity to go to America to play college golf. Having finished my golf scholarship at the University of Tennessee I turned professional at the end of 2009.

“I won my second ever Challenge Tour event which was the Turkish Airlines Challenge early in 2010. Following this I went on to play over 200 tournaments on Tour over the next decade as I moved between the European Tour and Challenge Tour.”
