Volunteers clear 17 bags of rubbish from beach

VOLUNTEERS cleared 17 bags of rubbish from Formby beach during a recent clean-up.

A team from the local Marine Conservation Society (MCS) targeted a 200 metre stretch of beach near to Victoria Road.

Led by from Andy Laverick (right) the 33 litter-pickers collected and recorded the rubbish found and the data will help MCS identify the main sources of litter.

The top three finds from this event were glass bottles, packets of either crisps or sweets, and also plastic caps/lids.

Andy says the beach cleans are ‘vital’. He said: “Beach litter isn’t just unsightly; it can also be very dangerous to both humans and wildlife. MCS is working towards ensuring local communities right up to UK governments work together to try and stop littering at source.”

The MCS’ next event will be held on Sunday, September 18 from 10am.
