‘Alternative format’ now being looked at to replace cancelled Motorfest event, say organisers

Aintree Circuit Club say it is hoping to stage an alternative event to the cancelled Motorfest.

The Champion revealed last week how this year’s event had been scrapped following a fall-out between the club, West Lancashire Borough Council and Lancashire County Council.

The popular event was due to have taken place on Sunday, August 28 after a two year absence caused by the pandemic.

But in a shock about-turn, Aintree Circuit Club pulled its support blaming both local authorities for ‘continuing complications and unnecessary delays’ to organising this year’s show.

The borough council’s ruling Labour group disputed the club’s version of events saying ACC had ‘consistently refused to provide full costings’ and ‘would not spend any of its substantial bank balance to cover the cost of the event this year - insisting instead that the council pay for it’.

Cllr Adam Yates, cabinet member for finance and economic regeneration, said: “It is a shame that the Motorfest event will not take place this year but we cannot allow the council to be held to ransom by a private organisation that wants the council to fund its profit-making every year.

“Aintree Circuit Club has been clear that the money made from Motorfest funds its activities for the rest of the year, yet it refuses to declare, or share, its profits.”

No sooner had the Champion gone to press with the story, when Aintree Circuit Club contacted us to say it is now hoping to stage an alternative event in Ormskirk.

A statement on the Ormskirk Motorfest website, reads how the group are “exploring options for an alternative format that will not require the use of public land or road closures to host the event or rely on support from WLBC.”

This new event could be staged on Monday, August 29.
