SKELMERSDALE West County Cllr, Julie Gibson, has called on the Conservative Government to end the “chaos and confusion” in their ranks and is calling for a General Election.
Her call comes as more friction starts to emerge between Tory leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
Cllr Gibson, claimed: “People in West Lancs urgently need the help of a functioning national government. We are experiencing a cost-of-living crisis, people struggling to make ends meet, paying record prices for petrol and we have just experienced a national emergency of extreme weather conditions and yet there is no co-ordination or guidance from government nationally.
“We need a functioning government, and we clearly have not got one.”
Cllr Gibson, continued: “It is unacceptable that it may take until September to find a replacement for the Prime Minister. At the moment we have a ‘zombie’ government and a cabinet that has key posts in departments that are not filled.
“Just a few weeks ago, the Conservative Government was telling us how important its ‘Levelling Up’ agenda is and there was a bill going through parliament to enshrine this.
“Two weeks later we have a new Secretary of State and talk that the entire process may be scrapped and started again.
“Local Government cannot sit around and wait for the whim of a government to decide on its next slogan. We need decisions, backed up by legislation that we can plan for now, not at some time in the future.
Cllr Gibson concluded: “The Conservatives are making the rules up as they go along to serve only themselves and not the people they are there to represent.
“In contrast, whilst the Conservatives fight amongst themselves Labour is ready, willing and capable to take the fight to the people of this country; what we need is a General Election.”
